Miss Philippines Lara Quigaman wins Miss International 2005

Monday, September 26, 2005

A few weeks after Manny Paquiao brought international fame and glory to the Philippines, another one gives sunshine to our nation. This time, a Filipina by the name of Lara Quigaman is the source of Filipino pride and joy.

Precious Lara Quigaman emerged victorious from the other 51 candidates in the Miss International 2005 held in Tokyo, Japan last 26 September 2005. This year’s pageant, where contestants paraded in their national costumes, bikinis and evening dresses, was organized by the Japan’s International Cultural Association.

The 22-year old Quigaman is followed by Ms Dominican Republic Yadira Geara Cury, 19 and Ms Finland, Susanna Laine.

I wasn’t able to personally watch the pageant (even on television) but from what the news say, Precious Lara is a fashion model, freelance web writer and graduated from a college in the United Kingdom. I dunno much about her background but what I surmise is that her parents are Filipinos who have migrated in the United Kingdom. Not to dampen our festive mood but this makes me wonder how much of a Filipina she really is. I really do hope I am wrong, after all, she wouldn’t have represented the Philippines otherwise.

With bad news left and right here in the Philippines, this is a great refresher indeed. I hope we get to hear more of this from now on.

Kai’s Birthday Celebration

Sunday, September 25, 2005

Kai invited the Beerkadets to celebrate her birthday last 24 September 2005 at Gerry’s Grill Greenhills. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon but everybody made it. Err.. apologies to Kai and the rest of the Beerkadets for my arriving very very late last Saturday. My mouth watered when I saw the food they feasted on but I couldn’t get myself to eat, as a self-imposed punishment for being late. :’( [I am really sorry Kai] I will really try my best to come on time for these gatherings next time.

Thanks to Jinky for the Every Flavor Beans and the Tingler. ^_^

Fraggle was the first to leave (late for a date?), then Naja. We tried to delay Naja by taking her umbrella but Kevin, being the gentleman that he is, offered his (in exchange for Naja’s Avon one). Hehehe.. In the end, we had to let her go as we couldn’t bear the thought of Kevin with an Avon umbrella.

Paula and the rest wanted to rent a computer to join their Ragna buddies so we stood up to leave. I went to the washroom for a few minutes and when I came out, there was only Teddy and Yamiyo. We didn’t know where the rest went so we checked out Fullybooked and read several books for a while. My stomach was grumbling so I entreated the guys to leave and buy some food. We bought some Go-nuts Donuts, Pastillas de Leche for me, Chocolate Frost for Teddy and Strawberry Glaze for Yamiyo. I wanted to eat more (I actually finished of Teddy’s) but both of them were still full from lunch.

With recharged tummies, we embarked on hunting a messenger’s bag for my Teddy. Yamiyo joked that his mom was always at Greenhills, because she always gets lost and fails to go out. After several stalls, we found a suitable bag. I wanted to haggle but the guys dampened my style. Just proves to show how little guys know when it comes to shopping. *sigh*

It was getting dark and almost time for dinner so I ordered take out from Tokyo Tokyo. Guys were still full, so I ordered for myself alone. This is when I read Jinky’s text, asking where we were. It has been four hours hence so I thought that the rest has prolly gone home. So we all went home full and happy last Satuday.

chompy.i.ph will be temporarily down

Thursday, September 22, 2005

That’s right, chompy.i.ph will go offline for a short this Thursday night, 9pm September 22, 2005 to 3am the next day (Philippine time, GMT +0800). That’s six hours!

Actually, it’s not just me but the whole i.ph site. The system will be under maintenance to improve the services and make our lives easier. So it’s not a bad thing especially since we are being informed beforehand.

So please do come back to visit after after that.

Tuesday Chomps

Tuesday, September 20, 2005

I am at work again, swamped with reports and deadlines and readings.

I was not able to make it to the Mythology Class Launch last Friday.

I spent Saturday pigging out at Kamayan. If you think Teddybear ate more than me, think again.

Last movie I watched was Flight of the Dragons, based on the fantasy novel George and the Dragon.

I am currently reading George and the Dragon.

I am in super duper hyper PMS mode this week, I easily get irritated in the smallest and simplest things. BEWARE!

Beerlenium is back! The First Beerkada Comic Book

Monday, September 19, 2005

Are you holding out on buying Treskada (Beerkada Book 3) and Beerkuwatro (Beerkada Book 4) because you have not read Beerlenium (Beerkada Book 1)?

Beerlenium was already out of stock when you went to the out to buy your copy?

Are you a newly-ordained Beerkadet?Did someone borrow your copy of Beerlenium but failed to return it?

Did you give copies to your friends but failed to save one for you?

Did you misplace your copy?Did your dog or any other animal ate it?

You have a copy, the original one that is, with the very small font and *ahem* several typo errors?

Do you have a very good copy of Beerlenium but just can’t resist the urge to buy a new one?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, worry no more!

Due to popular demand, Beerlenium is back in print! Limited first 500 copies of this edition will be distributed through out selected Comic Quest branches all over Metro Manila. More will be available in the coming weeks at Powerbooks and National.

For only Php95.00!!!

In this latest edition, additional 4 pages of never before printed Beerkada strips are added. Some err.. errors have also been corrected.

Watch out for this fresh off-the printing press reprint and grab your copy now! Available by the end of this week, but why risk it? Go to Comic Quest now, everyday until you get one! Demand them to immediately display the books on their shelves!

Chomp chomp chomp!!! ;)

Gullible or Free-Thinker?

Sunday, September 18, 2005

Got this from Ariel’s blog: the Gullibility Factor Test at newstarget.com. You just answer True or False questions and they tabulate your score at the end, with explanation and correct answers. They will then tell you whether you are a free-thinking individual, or a total mind slave.

I am such a  sucker for quizzes so I took it. I got a score of 61, and like Ariel, I am a Learner:
~~~~~~~~~~~
Learner
As a Learner, you’re smart enough to know better, yet you’re still not fully informed about reality. Around 15% of the population are Learners. You have the critical thinking skills to be a truly free individual, but you haven’t exercised them enough yet. From time to time, you’re still manipulated by the powers that be, although you frequently learn from those mistakes and refuse to be exploited again. You buy things because they are practical, not because they’re cool.
If you were in The Matrix, you would have taken the red pill, but you would still be in a state of mild disbelief about the nature of reality. You are essentially unplugged, but still untrained. With more knowledge, you could become a true free thinker.
Your architects: You have always been an independent thinker. You rebelled against your parents, schoolteachers and always chose to hang out with smart friends who weren’t necessarily that popular to the “in” crowd. Increasingly, you shape your own world by deciding what actions to take based on your own internal drive rather than what society tells you is right.
Action steps: Learn more. Educate yourself through alternative media and cutting-edge books.
~~~~~~~~~~~

In some aspects, I agree. I am a Learner, and I am hungry for knowledge and information. The recent tasks I had to do for my job made me into a sponge absorbing everything as much as I can, I can as soon as I can. I did not rebel against my parents (well, maybe before, but not outright and only in some small ways like most teenagers). I did not feel the urge to hang around the “in” crowd, I made my own.

A little warning though, people should not accept all that is said in quizzes such as these. We need to think for ourselves and decide the path we are going to take, not only because some quiz tells us so.

Mythology Class Re-launch

Friday, September 16, 2005

I am still in the office, finishing up on a report but will be going to Rockwell later to meet up with the Artists’ Den for the re-launch of Arnold Arre’s Mythology Class. I actually haven’t read the four-part graphic novel, maybe I’ll buy my copy later. So no meeting later at Gloria Jean’s.

Arnold Arre is also the creator of After Eden, a favorite romantic graphic novel of mine. So maybe I’ll like Mythology Class too. After all, I am an avid follower of Greek Mythology (though I am under the suspicion that the latter had nothing to do with the former.)
