Congrats to Manny Pacquiao!
Monday, September 12, 2005He did it again.
Manny Pacquiao won his most recent boxing match at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California Saturday evening, September 10 (Sunday morning here in the Philippines, 11 September 2005). The Pacman knocked out his opponent, Mexican Hector Velasquez in the sixth round of their World Boxing Council super featherweight bout.
I was able to watch the first four rounds of their 12 rounds of fight live at Channel 9 which started around 1130 am. Had to leave though for mass. When we came back, I found out that Manny already knocked out his opponent in the sixth round. Sayang! Hindi pa namin nahintay.
Anyway, we were able to watch the re-run in the evening. Wow, I was really impressed. I could see in the first few rounds that they were really exchanging blows, with the difference that the Pacman seemed unfazed, while Velasquez seemed to be slowing down and his blows a bit aimless. In the earlier rounds, Velasquez was taunting Pacqiao by spreading his hands at the side, as if saying “Hit me if you can” and “Is that all you’ve got?”
During the last 10 seconds of the sixth round, Manny was able to corner the Mexican and repeatedly gave him his lefts and rights and jabs and punches, oblivious to the weakened blows of Hector. That’s right, Pacqiao didn’t bother defending himself. I think he was really bent on ending the round then and there. Hector also didn’t have any strength left to defend himself or even move his feet. (You know how it is that boxers always need to be on the go, hoppin from one spot to another?) Eventually, the Mexican went down on his knees, and Referee Lou Moret came to count and check up on him. He didn’t fight after that.
Official time? Manny Pacquiao beat Hector Velasquez by a technical knock out (TKO) at the sixth round, 2 minutes and 59 seconds (each round is 3 minutes). The Pacman improved his stats to 40-3-2 with 31 KOs while the Mexican fell to 42-11-2.
Aside from Manny Pacquiao, two other Filipinos won their own respective boxing matches: Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and Hawaii-born Brian Viloria knocked out their separate opponents. I was able to watch Brian Viloria’s match. He is otherwise known as the Hawaiian Punch and his opponent really look drunk when he got knocked out during the first round, surrendering his title to Viloria. Viloria then offered his win to boxer Contreras, who suffered a fatal injury from their previous match.
Ang galing galing talaga ng Pilipino. Mabuhay ka! (Filipinos are really great. Long live Filipinos!)

Eiga Sai 2005
Friday, September 2, 2005I have been remiss in updating my blog and I apologize. Just been so busy at work this week.
Moving on, I would like to invite everyone to Eiga Sai 2005. It is a free Japanese horror film showing all over the Metro. First stop at Shangri-la from August 31 (Wednesday) to September 5 (Monday). It will then proceed to the UP Film Institute from September 13 (Tuesday) to 17 (Saturday). Last stop will be at the CCP Dream Theater from September 20 (Tuesday) to 25 (Sunday). Please visit this link: http://www.jfmo.org.ph/schedule.htm for the Eiga Sai Screening Schedule. Please note that screenings are subject to change though. A warning, get your (free) tickets at the cinemas an hour before screen time, or suffer the cruel fate Teddy and Chompy encountered at the second day of screening at Shangri-la.
This year’s collection has 7 films: Pulse (Kairo), Haunted School (Gakko no Kaidan), House (Hausu), Kwaidan (Kaidan), The Ugetsu Story (Ugetsu Monogatari), Yotsuya Ghost Story (Yotsuya Kaidan) and Tomie: Rebirth. Please visit this page for the synopsis of the films: http://www.jfmo.org.ph/synopsis_new.htm.
I have to say that the Japanese make really really scary films so if you get high by scaring yourself witless, this is should be on your must-see list.
On a different note, I have seen previews of the Hollywood remake Darkwater. I have seen the original Japanese version and it was so scary. I don’t know why the US keeps remaking Japanese horror films that they can’t live up to. Remember the Ring?
