MAN OF LA MANCHA is based on the Miguel de Cervantes` classic gem `Don Quixote de la Mancha` which was made into a popular Broadway musical by Dale Wasserman with Lyrics by Joe Darion and Music by Mitch Leigh. It is a play within a play. Miguel de Cervantes is jailed during the days of the inquisition and defends himself from being attacked by his fellow inmates by telling them the story of an old nobleman, Alonso Quijana who, with his faithful servant Sancho Panza, embarks on a journey to recover the lost days of knights and chivalry. On the way they meet a rough band of muleteers and a beautiful whore named Aldonza. Believing himself to be the knight Don Quixote, he sees Aldonza as the Lady Dulcinea. His quest for good in the world is thwarted by his niece, her fiancé, and his housekeeper who have their own reasons for keeping him home.
The City of Makati, Ayala Cinemas, Globe Telecom, and AVON have joined forces with REP to make the production of this musical possible. Support for the Manila Symphony Orchestra for this production was provided by Metro Bank, International Exchange Bank, Bank of the Philippine Islands, Deutsche Bank, the Philippine National Bank, Security Bank Corporation, Banco de Oro Universal Bank and the Friends of Repertory.
