Hail King Kong! Eight Wonder of the World

Wednesday, January 25, 2006

After watching the latest remake of King Kong by Peter Jackson, I joked that the 3-hour film can be summarized as such: first 30 minutes at the city, 1 hour for the sea voyage, another hour for the adventure in Skull Island, and the remaining 30 minutes back at the city and King Kong’s death. (What?!? Did I spoil the movie for you? :p)

Even so, I found the movie quite enjoyable. One would not notice the hours go by with the excitement filled film. But here are some of my thoughts on the movie:

1. I didn’t like Jack Black before, and I didn’t like him any less in this movie. I guess he really is a good actor to evoke enmity from me. I just hated his character! Anyway, after watching the School of Rock recently, I learned to like Jack Black a bit. :p

2. In spite of the possible millions of blonds in New York City at that time, it was really surprising that King Kong had a very good memory and visual perception (probably helped by his sense of smell as well.)

3. Adrien Brody’s character fitted the chatacteristics of my type of guy: the silent nerdy/geeky but very charming guy. He he he..

4. Isn’t Andy Serkis tired of portraying out of the ordinary characters? At least in this film, we get to see his face. ;)

5. I like the way the movie gave King Kong a very humane (?) personality, one might even mistake him to be Tarzan. His gestures and facial expressions really tugged at my heart.

6. Now we know why dinosaurs are extinct, they stampede to their death, or fall of cliffs. :p What’s the deal with the giant centipede? And why does Ann Darrow not keep her mouth shut? :p I really hate creepy bugs, more so that they are a hundred times bigger!

7. Ann’s performance for King Kong, which eventually won the ‘brute’ over was really funny. In fairness, I think Naomi Watts acted pretty well. Her eyes were very emotive.

8. At the start of the movie and all through out, Teddy kept telling me, "That’s Tom Hank’s son" (pointing at Preston played by Colin Hanks). It really is nice to watch a movie with a fore-knowledge of some trivia. (Btw, Teddy was also teh one who told me that King Kong/Andy Serkis is also the guy named Lumpy who got eaten by those multiple cylindrical thingies with sharp teeth.

9. King Kong was the ‘eigth wonder of the world", how about the dinosaurs who are supposed to be extinct?? Why didn’t they have any interest in capturing one of those? (My bad, this movie is about King Kong, not Jurassic Park LOL)

10. The natives were really scary and looked very real to me. I could not help thinking that there really is a Skull Island out there with people similar to them.

11. It was nice to see Kyle Chandler (Bruce Baxter, the actor) again. I always watched his TV series Early Edition (as Gary Hobson) whenever I can before.

All in all, watching King Kong was a very good experience for me. I can’t remember having seen the earlier King Kong movies, but i definitely like the way they have brought King Kong back to the theater. :)
